One more title for Federer

The tennis world is happy that the nice guy Roger Federer has won his 12th Grand Slam title. But it is too early to rate him as the best in history. He is still to win the French Open, yet to surpass Rod Laver’s two calendar year Grand Slams in 1962 and 1969, Pete Sampras’s 14 Grand Slams, World No. 1 ranking from 1993 to 1998, and Bill Tilden’s World No.1 ranking from 1920 to 1925.

Outstanding achievement

By retaining the Asia Cup, the Indian hockey team has shown that it has made great progress. It maintained an impeccable record of not losing a single match. All praise to the team members and the coach for the outstanding achievement. The triumph augurs well for India in its quest for a berth in the Beijing Olympics.

D.B.N. Murthy,

Bangalore

Convincing show

India’s show in the Asia Cup hockey tournament was convincing right through. Raghunath’s goals, Prabhjot Singh’s splendid performance and the cheers of fans all brought memories of yore. Will Indian hockey become a force to reckon with once again?

Cut umpire’s fee

Sachin Tendulkar became a victim of bad umpiring once again in the one-dayer at Lord’s in the NatWest Series. Should not the ICC umpire’s match fee be cut by 50 per cent for such bad decisions? For, not only was the batsman denied a decent score but also the team lost a winning chance.

K. Pradeep,

Chennai

Robin Uthappa deserved award

For that dramatic victory in the Oval one-dayer, Robin Uthappa deserved the ‘Man of the Match’ award. Of course the recipient Sachin Tendulkar’s 94 cannot be underestimated but Uthappa showed the nerve to stay and score in the crucial last over.

T.M.S. Mani,

Tiruchi
