Good spell by Deepan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Off-spinner Deepan Raj and medium pacer Zulfiqar enabled Kollam take the first day’s honours against host Kottayam in the South Zone inter-district under-19 cricket tournament at the Medical College ground here on Tuesday.

Kottayam batsmen barring Sibi Chacko (45) fell to the guiles of Deepan Raj who scalped six for 44. At Nehru stadium, an unbeaten 59 by R. Sandeep carried Alappuzha to safety against Thiruvananthapuram.

The scores: Kottayam 173 in 58.5 overs (Sibi Chacko 45, Deepan Raj six for 44, Zulfiqar four for 64) v Kollam 20 for one in nine overs.

Alappuzha 142 for five in 61 overs (R.Sandeep 59 no) v Thiruvananthapuram.
