Tara confident of making the transition

NEW DELHI: Tara Iyer has been making waves in recent weeks, by following the footsteps of the more illustrious Sania Mirza in making the singles final of the Asian Championship, apart from winning a string of titles at the $10,000 ITF tournaments at home and abroad.

Felicitated

In trying to provide a better support for her, Planet Sports felicitated the 19-year-old Tara in the Capital on Wednesday, by presenting her the latest Prince racquet that would give her 24 per cent more racquet speed apart from maximum spin and high precision.

“I am getting used to competing against quality players. I haven’t played too many of them so far. The more I get to play them, the better I would get. ,” said Tara.

She conceded that it was a good opportunity for her to compete at the Sunfeast Open WTA event in Kolkata next week, and that she was looking to play well.

No time limit

“The transition to the higher levels is not easy, but am confident that I would keep improving to be comfortable at that level soon. I am ready to work hard but am not giving myself any time frame to accomplish that,” said Tara.

The young girl hoped that she would get adequate support in the near future so as to afford a personal trainer who could make a world of difference to her physical fitness and thus, in turn, to her overall game.

“I am happy with my fitness now, and the ability to bounce back from tight situations against quality opponents, to win key matches.

"I am also happy with my inclination to go for the shots in tough moments without resorting to safe play. That, I think, has been the key to my success in the last couple of months. Of course, I need to work on improving every aspect of my game,” said Tara.

She expressed her surprise at being able to do well in doubles as well, and assured that she would continue to play doubles to possibly use it as a tool to improve her singles play.

“I would love to play doubles with Sania, but we would be playing in different levels of tournaments most of the time,” she said, with modesty. — Special Correspondent
