COIMBATORE: United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), a specialised agency of the United Nations based in Vienna, has agreed in principle to support the establishment of the proposed science park at Bharathiar University. This agreement was made when Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam visited UNIDO along with State Planning Commission Vice-Chairman M. Naganathan recently. “Director- General of UNIDO Kandeh K. Yumkella promised that the science park will be established subject to certain terms and conditions laid down by the agency,” the Vice-Chancellor told The Hindu. Research environmentDr. Thiruvasagam had recently announced that Bharathiar University would set up a ‘Science Park’ on 100 acres on its premises to create a science research environment. He expected the park to come up in collaboration with local industries and technology from abroad. “The science park will aim at making Vision 2020 a reality. The park will have separate pavilions, viz., Agro Park, Medi Park, Tele Park, Space Age Park and Information Technology Park,” he said. As part of the agreement, UNIDO would provide the methodology of establishment, policy advisory service, sharing international innovation and success, conducting area surveys, mobilising local resources and providing linkages between knowledge-based institutions and industries. The Vice-Chancellor said a formal letter of requisition from the university was sent on September 12 after his return from Vienna. Once an agreement of understanding was made out, a team from UNIDO would visit Coimbatore to survey the place, visit industries, and involve itself in the establishment of the park.
