Belgaum
With promises: (From left) Belgaum district BJP president Jagdish Metgud, State BJP president D.V. Sadananda Gowda, BJP general-secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Minister for Horticulture Shashikant A. Naik releasing the election manifesto for Belgaum City Corporation polls in Belgaum on Wednesday. Belgaum: The meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of Belgaum City unit held in the presence of top State leaders came as a disappointment for many. Given the timing of the meeting and the party’s plan to capture the highest number of seats and establish its supremacy in the polls for urban local bodies, party workers were expecting the leaders to look into their problems, resolve differences and guide them to realise its electoral plan. Instead, the leaders followed the beaten track and reiterated the achievements of the coalition Government and attributing most of it to the party (BJP) and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. They also trained guns at the United Progressive Alliance and the Congress in the State. Leaders including State BJP president D.V. Sadananda Gowda and BJP’s national general-secretary H.N. Anantkumara asked the workers top strive hard to ensure that the party candidates excelled in the polls. Mr. Yediyurappa said that the local leaders would be held responsible if the party candidates put up a poor performance. The issue of the BJP seeking the support of other parties or groups/organisations to defeat the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi in Belgaum has left to the local unit. Mr. Anantkumar released the party’s election manifesto for Belgaum City Corporation polls. It promised development and improvements in civic amenities in the city, which is slated to be developed into the State’s second capital. Earlier, Mr. Sadananda Gowda told presspersons that the BJP was willing to work with any party or organisation except the Congress and Communist parties in the elections. The BJP’s role in the coalition government had been noted by the people and they would undoubtedly support the party candidates, he said. At the meeting, Mr. Yediyurappa asked the workers to convey the achievements of the BJP to the people and ensure that the welfare measures initiated by the Government reached the right people. Mr. Yediyurappa’s candidature for the Chief Minister’s post was unquestionable and there was complete unanimity in the party in this regard, he said. He said that the BJP would soon come out with two documents — charge sheet against the Congress and a manifesto for development which the workers would take to the people in the civic polls and also the general elections.
