BELLARY: The authorities have decided to step up vigilance to ensure free and fair polling in the elections to the urban local bodies in the district, Kashinath Pawar, Assistant Commissioner and Assistant Returning Officer has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said apart from setting up check-posts on the State’s borders in Bellary and Sirguppa taluks to monitor inter-State vehicle movement, all poultry farms, rice mills and godowns on the outskirts of the city would be kept under observation. This was to prevent unlawful assembly of persons and storage liquor and weapons. Special mobile squads comprising officials from the departments of Revenue, Police and Excise would also be formed to conduct raids, he said. In order to preclude the possibility of electoral malpractice, the authorities have decided to post a presiding officer from outside the taluk. At a meeting of all parties convened to highlight the need to follow election rules and the code of conduct, Mr. Pawar emphasised that action would be taken against those found violating them. Apart from removing cut-outs, banners and buntings installed without prior permission of the municipal authorities, legal action would also be initiated, he said.
