19 get life term for committing murder

He was a Congress leader


HASSAN: All the 19 persons accused in the Venkataramana Gowda murder case were sentenced to life imprisonment by the fast track court here on Wednesday.

The judge, Mahadeve Gowda, also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs. 2,000 each. Venkataramana Gowda was a former Hassan City Municipal Council vice-president and a Congress leader.

The Government had appointed special public prosecutor N.N. Bhat to represent the State.

On October 1, 2001, Venkataramana Gowda was returning to his village, Uppalli (under Gorur police limits in Hassan taluk), from Hassan at 9.45 p.m. in his vehicle along with driver Mallik.

At the entrance of the village, Gurupada blocked the road. The others, Range Gowda, his son Ravi, Raje Gowda, Nagaraja, Basave Gowda, Shivanna, Ashoka, Kumar, Thimmaiah, Putte Gowda, Devaraja, Rangaswamy, Paramesha, Tenginakai Puttappa, Appanna Eswar, Teerdesha, Mahalinga and Cheluva Murthy, attacked Venkataramana Gowda with lethal weapons, and he died on the spot. They also attacked Mallik, injuring him grievously.

They damaged the vehicle and took away Rs. 50,000 in cash kept inside. On a complaint by Mallik, the police started an investigation and arrested the 19 people.

They were booked under sections 143, 147, 148, 120B, 341, 307, 302, 427 of the IPC, read with 149, and remanded in judicial custody. The judge said all charges against them were proved. In addition, all they were sentenced five years of rigorous imprisonment.
