BIJAPUR: College students held a protest march here on Wednesday seeking the arrest of offenders who tried to rape an SSLC girl, staying in a government hostel, on Monday night.

The students, mostly girls, who gathered under the banner of the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) and other wings of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) at Gandhi Chowk, took out a protest march to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and held a demonstration there.

Student leaders Siddalinga Bagewadi, Bharat Kumar, Deepti Devkate, Anil Hegdyal and H.T. Mallikarjuna sought the immediate arrest of all three culprits.

They said the incident showed that students, particularly girls staying in hostels, were not provided with adequate security and were vulnerable to such heinous crimes.

They said that this was not an isolated incident. Recently, a girl was hacked to death in a college after she refused advances by a man. A few weeks before that a teenager died in an acid attack while her sister was deformed in the same incident. A student was assaulted near the residence of the Superintendent of Police last year. In most cases offenders remained unpunished.

They said that the police should act swiftly and arrest the offenders to send out a strong message. Also, adequate security must be provided in all hostels. Otherwise, they warned, an agitation would be spearheaded. A memorandum was handed over to an official.
