Modern State library planned at Kotturpuram

CHENNAI: A modern State library is to come up at Kotturpuram here at an estimated cost of Rs. 100 crore.

Nine acres of land had been transferred by the Revenue department to the School Education department. A government order was issued a week ago and the School Education department took possession of the land, Thangam Thennarasu, School Education Minister, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

The library would come up at the site identified by the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for the Secretariat.

Mr. Thennarasu said the Public Works Department had initiated a two-stage tendering process. This would be completed in the next four-five months. By March next, the construction was expected to begin and would be completed in 18 months.

Technical support of the Singapore National Library would be obtained, he said.

According to a senior official, the library building with about 31,600 square metre, would have nine floors with two auditoriums and a conference hall. As further expansion of Connemara Library would not be possible, the new library was planned.

The Government had been taking efforts to improve facilities at the Connemara Library. Last year, one floor of the library was air-conditioned. This year, one more floor would be provided with the facility.
