Tenure of Jasraj Chopra panel extended

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government on Wednesday extended the term of the Justice Jasraj Chopra Committee, set up by it to look into the demand of Gujjars for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes category, by three months.

The tenure of the committee, appointed three months back in the wake of a violent agitation by the Gujjar community, was to end on Wednesday (September 12).

There is considerable anxiety in the political and Government circles over the extension as the Gujjar Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti, the Gujjar Mahasabha and other caste bodies pressing for the new status for the community are against extension to the committee. They have been insisting on a letter from the State government to the Centre recommending the ST status for Gujjars at the earliest.

The Gujjar organisations are going ahead with the scheduled Mahapanchayat in Dholpur on Thursday and the government decision would have a major impact on the discussions there. Senior BJP leaders, including Gopinath Munde, party general secretary in charge of Rajasthan and Prakash Javadekar, party spokesperson, have been camping in Jaipur.
