HYDERABAD: In a high-action, high speed match, Kerala men subdued Andhra Pradesh 92-72 in the South Zone basketball championships here on Wednesday. At half-time, the winner trailed 36-37. Both the sides resorted to fast breaks and turnarounds to further their cause, the Kerala duo of Manoj and Rahul showing far superior ball-control. If one man made a difference to his team it was Manoj for the visitors, who with a whopping 34 points against his name, dominated the contest. AP’s attack showed more variety, Amruthraj and the fleet-footed Nagaraj finding the net through drive-in baskets, the latter at times hard to halt when on his solo sorties. When the host’s shooters couldn’t quite breach the rival’s restricted area, they resorted to scoring from outside the ‘’D’, but weren’t able to convert several chances that came their way. On the distaff side, Kerala had it much easier, defeating the home side 41-18. Though the AP women failed to score in the first quarter, they managed to do so in the next. The results: Men: Karnataka 54 (Roshan 9, G.P. Gautham 9) bt Puducherry 16 (S. Kumaran 10), Kerala 92 (Manoj 34, Rahul 14, Abhilash 12) bt AP 72 (Amruthraj 19, P.S. Nagaraj 19). Women: Karnataka 54 (Kruthika 8, Sumalatha 7, Sunitha 7) bt Puducherry 22 (Leela 8, Manjula 6, Sasikala 6), Kerala 41 (S.S. Anjana 8, Litty Mathew 8) bt AP 18 (B. Radhika 9). — Special Correspondent
