BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday asked the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to pay a student a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh. The student, Naveen (15), was badly injured and subsequently became incapacitated when a tree fell on him while he was cycling on K.R. Road in Basavanagudi on June 14, 2006. Naveen was an SSLC student and he said the injury had left him shattered. He said his mother was eking out a living by working as a domestic help. He said repeated representations to the authorities for compensation were of no avail. He said the BBMP is directly responsible for his injury. The Government advocate too submitted that the BBMP was responsible for monitoring the status of trees in the city. Justice Gunjal directed the BBMP to pay within four weeks Rs. 1 lakh compensation to the boy. Not a slumJustice Ajit Gunjal on Wednesday quashed a notification by the Karnataka State Slum Clearance Board declaring an area adjacent to Lavanya cinema in Bangalore as a slum. The petitioners had questioned the notification, saying that they had not been heard and no objections called for before declaring the area as a slum.
