BANGALORE: Members of Rameswaram Ramasethu Rakshana Vedike, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Sangh Parivar organisations stopped a train and staged rasta roko at different places in the city on Wednesday as part of the nation-wide protest against the Sethu Samudram ship channel project near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. Around 300 activists, including women, staged a demonstration at the City Railway Station. Following the protest, the departure of the Chennai-bound Shatabdi Express was delayed by 20 minutes. The police arrested a group of protesters and later released them. Hundreds of protesters blocked the roads and staged demonstrations at New Byappanahalli, off the NGEF factory, on Old Madras Road, near APMC Yard in Yeshwanthpur, near the Banashankari temple on Kanakapura Road and near Chandapur Circle on Hosur Road. Vehicular movement was affected for sometime at all these busy junctions following the demonstration, which passed off peacefully. The police had heightened security to ensure that no untoward incidents occurred during the protests. BJP MLAs S. Raghu (Shanthinagar), Nirmal Kumar Surana (Bharthinagar) and P.C. Mohan (Chickpet), MLC Shoba Karandalje, Vishwa Hindu Parishad vice-president Y.K. Raghavendra Rao, Rameswaram Ramasethu Rakshana Vedike convenor Sridhar and ABVP secretary K.N. Raghunandan led the protests.
