DC cautions parties on poll campaign

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, who is the Davangere District Election Officer, told political parties not to put banners or buntings on government buildings and on avenues.

He said the district administration would remove such banners and buntings and file a case against the president and general secretary of the party responsible for it.

Mr. Dyaberi said political parties and candidates and their supporters could put banners and buntings with permission from the city corporation or from the town municipality.

Displaying any such banners and buntings without the permission of the urban local bodies would be a cognizable offence, he said.

Political parties could display their posters and buntings on private buildings only after obtaining permission from the owner of the private buildings.

The office-bearers of some political parties had alleged that ballot boxes kept in a school in the previous local body elections were changed overnight before the counting began. They alleged that this was done with the connivance of some senior officials. They urged the Deputy Commissioner to ensure that there such incidents did not occur this year. A few of them had gone to the extent of urging the Deputy Commissioner to allow their party workers to stay in front of the strong room where the ballot boxes were kept to ensure that such reported incidents did not take place.

The Deputy Commissioner said that he was not aware of what happened in the last elections and assured that he had taken precautions to hold the elections in a free and fair manner.

He rejected the requests of some leaders to stay overnight in front of the strong room and said that there would be heavy police protection near the strong room and allayed the fears of political parties.

The Deputy Commissioner said that he had directed the Davangere City Corporation to remove all banners and buntings put up by some political parties on important circles and pavements.
