KFDC outlets to be revamped

Value-added fishery products likely

KFDC has three fish canteens in Bangalore

They will be remodelled and made attractive

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) plans to revamp its sales outlets in Bangalore to make them more attractive to customers.

The KFDC, which is headquartered in Hoige Bazaar in Mangalore, also wants to enter the value-added fishery products sector.

According to KFDC Managing Director V.K. Shetty, the three fish canteens in Bangalore will be revamped at a cost of Rs. 10 crore over the next one year. The Government has released Rs. 5 crore for the programme.

Mr. Shetty said the three fish canteens in Bangalore were located in Cubbon Park, opposite the Multi-Storeyed Building; another near the government aquarium; and one more in Indiranagar. All of them needed to be completely remodelled.

The canteen in Cubbon Park, which is the main outlet, does roaring business and sells about 600 packs a day. It will get a state-of-the-art kitchen equipped with steam and gas cooking ranges. The KFDC also plans to introduce a rooftop restaurant there. The existing building will also undergo some changes designed to provide more space for customers. To improve hygiene, the KFDC plans to provide a sterilisation plant and cleaning equipment. Mr. Shetty said it was not the intention of the KFDC to make it an expensive restaurant. The idea was to make the canteen presentable and hygienic.

KFDC Chairman K. Lakshminarayana said his dream was to have a production centre for value-added fishery products. The corporation had examined a few designs, and technical expertise would be provided by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, which is a unit of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research. He said the value added products would include a number of heat-and-eat dishes.

Director of Fisheries Veerappa Gowda said that the KFDC was being turned around financially, and all outstanding payments had been cleared. The Government released Rs. 4.5 crore last year, which was used to clear salary dues, making the KFDC debt free.

He said the KFDC had plans to sell fresh fish through one of the canteens.
