Mechanised boats to get turtle excluder devise

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust will fix a turtle excluder device in fishing nets to prevent the death of sea turtles, listed under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife Act, 1972.

The decision follows a survey that cites incidental catch as the main reason for death of sea turtles in the Gulf.

According to scientists, out of the five species (Olive Ridley, green, hawksbill, loggerhead and leatherback) found along the Tamil Nadu coast, Olive Ridley is considered the most common.

As authorities received reports of death of many sea turtles in the region, a study was conducted between August 27 and 28 to find out the reason. The scientists of the Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute, which conducted the study, recorded the stranded sea turtles between the coast of Mandapam and Erwadi.
