This Day That Age
Indian film producers could either reduce the footage of their films or produce less number of films. Mr. Morarji Desai, Minister for Commerce and Industry, said in the Rajya Sabha on September 12. Earlier, replying to Mr. Maheswar Naik, Mr. Nityanand Kanungo, Minister for Commerce, said that a suggestion to reduce the length of the Indian films had been made to the film industry as one of the possible measures for bringing down foreign exchange expenditure on the import of raw film. The imports had been cut down by 30 per cent. Mr. Prithviraj Kapoor (Nominated) said that the Indian filmgoers wanted lengthy films and did not see pictures which were less than 17 reels in length. He asked whether the Government would do something to educate the people to see shorter films. Mr. Morarji Desai said, “The taste has been created by the producers and the exhibitors themselves. It is for them to educate the people and not for the Government.”
