TIRUCHI: Tiruchi’s status as ‘Tower City’ owing to fabrication of 60 per cent of the current requirement of windmill towers in the country is poised for further consolidation.
In addition to the seven units that are entirely devoted to manufacture of windmill towers, five new dedicated units are due to come up shortly, according to BHEL Small Scale Industries Association president Rajappa Rajkumar. The existing units are also expanding their capacities. Every year, these units fabricate about 600 windmill towers and with the start of the new units, the number is expected to go up to 1,000. The turnover was Rs. 1,000 crore last year. The target for the current fiscal year is set at Rs. 1,500 crore.
From the time ancillary units diversified into fabricating windmill towers seven years ago, they have positioned themselves as the preferred destination for sourcing towers for windmill farms. The manufacturers have leveraged the quality advantage by virtue of sticking to practices adopted in the BHEL.
