Disaster relief: State to seek Rs. 7,000 cr.

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government will soon submit a memorandum to the Centre seeking financial assistance of Rs. 7,000 crore to implement various long-term projects to enable the State to cope with recurring natural disasters such as floods, drought and cyclone.

The draft of the memorandum was discussed by the State Assembly’s House Committee on Disaster Management here on Thursday. The Committee is headed by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Manmohan Samal.

According to the draft memorandum, the government will seek financial assistance under as many as nine different heads such as National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project, construction of multi-purpose shelters in flood affected areas, Mahanadi Basin Development Plan, addressing the flood and drainage problems, de-silting of river bed/mouth, drainage congestion and mitigation, coastal protection project and early flood warning system for Brahmani and Baitarani system.

Under the coastal protection project, the State has proposed to construct 66.26 km long seawall at open beaches at a cost of Rs. 173.53 crore; construction of 23.35 km of seawall at mouth of rivers at a cost of Rs. 106.55 crore; construction of 74.80 km of new saline embankments at a cost of Rs. 24.21 crore; and bank protection work on 43.20 km of tidal reaches at a cost of Rs. 30.68 crore.
