Air fare for Gulf returnees?

State exploring possibility of providing financial assistance

Delegation led by Minister Md. Ali Shabbir meets Chief Minister

HYDERABAD: The State Government is exploring the possibility of providing financial assistance to the expatriates to purchase air tickets to return to India before the amnesty granted by the United Arab Emirates ends next month.

A five-member delegation led by Energy Minister Md. Ali Shabbir, which returned to the city after a tour of UAE, met Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday evening and briefed him about the conditions of the expatriates, who were found to be staying ‘illegally’ in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Directive to Shabbir

The Chief Minister directed Mr. Shabbir to submit a final report on his visit to the UAE by Friday morning. The Chief Secretary, J. Harinarayan, was also in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs.

Mr. Shabbir told The Hindu that the State Government was studying the option of providing air tickets to expatriates, who were in a miserable condition and unable to return home. “We will consult the Ministry of External Affairs and also contact Indian Airlines to explore whether any concession in air tickets can be given to the expatriates,” he said.

Since the announcement of the amnesty, more than 8,000 expatriates had arrived in Hyderabad directly and another 1,500 via Mumbai. “We expect another 1,500 to return,” the Minister added.

Mr. Shabbir said a job mela exclusively for all the expatriates who had come back would be held on September 16 in Nizamabad.
