NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have expressed strong disapproval of the Government’s failure to amend the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Bill for protecting commercial activities in unauthorised colonies. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said: “It is regrettable that the amendment could not be effected during the monsoon session of Parliament. I will call on Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy soon to apprise him of the situation and urge him to take immediate action.” Mr. Gupta said the delay could be attributed to a “conflict of opinion” among the senior leadership of the Congress party. Since this issue concerned almost a third of Delhi’s population, it was essential that it was dealt with a sense of urgency. Leader of the House Subhash Arya said: “The Master Plan for Delhi-2021 clearly recognises the diverse usage of properties in rural areas. This is why these areas have been equated with the Walled City, Karol Bagh and Paharganj as a ‘special area’.” Both BJP leaders warned the authorities that their party would take to the roads in protest if required. “We will not allow them to seal commercial properties in rural areas. The Monitoring Committee is unnecessarily pressurising the MCD to resume the sealing drive. As per the Master Plan, it is clear that these areas are ‘special areas’ and according to the Clause 16.2, ‘special area’ building regulations are yet to be framed,” said Mr. Gupta.
