News scrolling across television channels about the Elevated Expressway under construction created quite a scare the other day.
The scroll that part of machinery had fallen off from the expressway near Mehdipatnam seriously injuring a few, set the alarm bells ringing. Taken aback by the ‘news’ and bombarded by calls, HUDA officials rushed to the site to ascertain facts.
It turned out to be a mechanical snag in the launching girder. It was the panic button pressed by contractors and workers and precautionary traffic diversion by the police that led to the working of rumour mills. But the rumours were doused soon enough and every one heaved a sigh of relief. On the other hand the talk is that the recent turbulent times in city, from crime to traffic problems, are the result of a city growing at a galloping rate with the infrastructure unable to keep pace. But there is another theory doing rounds these days. Some attribute all the bad times to change in the name of Hyderabad to ‘Greater Hyderabad’. Greater Hyderabad is the prefix given to Municipal Corporation denoting its expanded jurisdiction . In daily parlance, people refer to city like always as Hyderabad. Yet ‘believers’ argue a suitable change in the name ‘Greater Hyderabad’ would do a world of good to city.
