Mould your career to fit the plastics industry

Special Correspondent

Attractive pay packet offered, students told

TAMBARAM: The field of polymer engineering and technology, offer tremendous growth prospects for young engineering graduates, said speakers at a seminar on Wednesday.

Participating in a seminar on ‘Engineering plastics – recent trends’, organised by the Department of Polymer Technology of B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College, Vandalur, in association with the Indian Plastics Institute, they said the students could look forward to having a lucrative career.

Reliance Industries Limited vice-president Krish S. Iyengar, who inaugurated the seminar, set the tone for the discussion by urging experts and the industry to resist ‘anti-plastic’ campaigns. He said fears of, objections to and the criticism of plastics were unfounded.

The industry also needs to educate society and critics about the benefits of plastics, and its integral role in the daily life of people, he added.

Noting that engineering thermo plastics was the solution for metal replacement, he said there was a lot of space for the industry to grow, considering the ever-increasing demand for plastics and polymers in all industries.

Mr. Iyengar also reminded stakeholders in the industry that it was important for them to take extreme care of the environment.

Members of the Indian Plastics Institute said the demand for qualified youth in the industry far exceeded the number of graduates passing out.

Academics called for greater industry-institution interaction.

They said that it was crucial to improvement in the quality of teaching and research at the college level. More than a dozen companies had set up stalls at the programme.

Apart from private companies from the plastics and polymer industry, research institutes too participated in the event.

Y.V. Raman, chairman of the Indian Plastics Institute, V.M. Periasamy, college principal, and R.M. Vasanthakumari, head of the department, spoke.
