Kennel Club of India chairman S. Pathy CHENNAI: The Kennel Club of India (KCI) has started the work of implanting microchips in dogs from August this year, said S. Pathy, chairman, KCI. The effort was well accepted by dog lovers and breeders and the Club was getting requests from breeders for more microchips to enable them to implant in the older dogs. The KCI, in order to reduce the financial burden on breeders, would take up the responsibility of procuring the microchips and supply them to breeders at cost price, he said. All microchips, supplied by the KCI, would have a distinct KCI code number. In the past, most countries tattooed the dogs with specific numbers and these numbers formed part of the registration certificate. Implanting microchips is the most fool-proof and easiest way to identify a dog, Mr Pathy said. Unique number
It has a unique number programmed into its memory and implanted into the animal under the skin between shoulder blades. Details about the owner and information about the animal is logged into a central database, he said. The device remains with the animal for the rest of its life. Microchips could prevent falsification of pedigrees and could also prevent unscrupulous breeders from applying for more registration papers than required. It would also help in tracing the lost and stolen dogs. For further details, contact CEO, Kennel Club of India on 044-26214035 and their e-mail id is: kennelclub@eth.net
