NEW DELHI: A court here on Thursday remanded Prakash Singh, the reporter involved in the fake sting operation on a woman school teacher, to two-day judicial custody. While remanding Prakash to judicial custody on the plea of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alok Agrawal also asked the prosecution to explain why Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code has been invoked against him. Earlier, the prosecution had sought 14-day judicial custody for Prakash. But arguing against the judicial custody, defence counsel Murari Tiwari asked what evidence the prosecution has to invoke the particular section against his client. He told the court that there was not an iota of evidence against Prakash. The court then sought an explanation from the prosecution. Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Prakash Bhatia, however, sought two-day time to explain the reasons for invoking Section 420 against the reporter. He, however, told the court that the public at large had been deceived by the so-called sting operation and that it was not done in society’s interest. Subsequently the court remanded Prakash to judicial custody till the prosecution filed its reply on Sept. 15.
