KOCHI: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. has appealed to LPG customers not to resort to panic booking of refill supplies since it aggravates pressure on the supply system, delaying restoration of normality. In a press statement here on Thursday, a company official said any disruption in the movement of cylinders could cause a break in the supply chain and on account of this, a “marginal build-up of backlog of refill supplies is unavoidable.” During the Onam season, there was a huge demand for LPG cylinders and some disruption in distribution affected the smooth supply of LPG. However, “currently, oil companies are fully geared to tackle this backlog.” The oil companies were operating bottling plants on Sundays too to meet the backlog. They were in a comfortable position to meet the demand, said the press statement. Besides the disruption, there was some amount of diversion of cylinders. This had been happening despite the free availability of LPG for commercial use in 19-kg cylinders. Periodic raids were being carried out by the Civil Supplies Department to curb this practice. The statement said that with measures in place, the supply situation would be back to normal within a week.
