NEW DELHI: A large number of Bharatiya Janata Party workers held a demonstration near the Delhi Assembly on Thursday to demand immediate regularisation of all unauthorised colonies and a complete stop to sealing and demolition. The protesters courted arrest when the police prevented them from reaching the Assembly.

Addressing the protesters who had started the march from Master Chandgi Ram Akhara, the BJP leaders including Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Delhi unit president Harsh Vardhan, former Union Minister Vijay Goel, and Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi said the lives of over 40 lakh people living in these unauthorised colonies had been affected by indecision over the issue of regularisation.

Shouting slogans demanding regularisation of unauthorised colonies and criticising the policies of the Centre and the Delhi Government over the issue, the protesters broke through barriers and tried to move towards the Assembly. But they were not allowed to go beyond a point and were detained and taken to the Maurice Nagar police lines from where they were later released. Addressing the protesters, Prof. Malhotra called for providing immediate relief to the unauthorised colonies through implementation of legislation so that the sword of demolition and displacement hanging on the residents was removed.

He said the problem of illegal construction and unauthorised colonies could be solved only through an amnesty scheme.
