Court quashes selection process for Urdu teachers

Allahabad: Close on the heels of the Mayawati Government’s dismissal of 6,500 policemen, the Allahabad High Court on Friday quashed the selection process for appointment of over 10,000 Urdu teachers in schools during the previous Samajwadi Party regime in Uttar Pradesh.

Passing the order, Justice Arun Tandon held that the entire exercise undertaken by the Government was “illegal and contrary to the statutory rules”.

“The entire exercise undertaken by the State Government in respect of advertisements for special BTC (basic training certificate) course, Urdu, is illegal and contrary to the statutory rules”, the court said.

“Admissions granted to candidates in respect of the said course are illegal and the district institutes of education and training cannot be permitted to provide any further training to the candidates so admitted nor any examination can be held for the course”, the court said.

The court also said the State Government has not been granted permission to start special BTC training course, Urdu, by the National Council for Teachers’ Education (NCTE) till date in accordance with section 14/15 of NCTE Act and hence no training in the aforesaid course can be provided by the DIET for recruitment of teachers for imparting education in other subjects through Urdu medium.

“Urdu is not one of the languages/subjects included in the syllabi...And hence no teachers for imparting education in Urdu are required in schools:, the court said.

The judgement was passed while deciding the writ petitions of Sumbul Naqvi and several others who have moved the court contending that qualified teachers were available for appointment against existing vacancies and therefore the process of direct recruitment through special BTC training course, Urdu, was totally uncalled for.
