CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday appealed to Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Nedumaran to give up his indefinite fast in support of his demand for providing food and medical assistance to “suffering Tamils” in Sri Lanka.
In his letter to Mr. Nedumaran, the Chief Minister assured him that he would take steps to provide the assistance to the Tamils.
Discussion suggested
Advising him to call off the fast as it would affect his health, Mr. Karunanidhi said he would meet and discuss the issue with him after his return to Chennai.
State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan in his appeal to Nedumaran wanted him to give up his fast. In a statement, he also urged the Centre to take steps to rush assistance to “suffering Tamils” in Sri Lanka.
The Indian Government should send the relief materials through International Red Cross Society.
Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani also appealed to Mr. Nedumaran to call off his fast as it would create embarrassment for the State Government. In a statement, Mr. Veeramani said the State was aware of the issue and would definitely take steps.
