Vaishali incident not a theft case: government
Patna: Facing flak from the Opposition and the National Human Rights Commission for incidents of vigilantism, the Bihar government on Sunday announced that a collective fine of up to Rs. 5,000 would be levied on each of the inhabitants of a village if such incidents occurred in future.
The government also admitted that the incident in Vaishali, where a mob lynched 10 alleged thieves and critically wounded another on September 13, was “prima facie not a case of theft” as reported earlier. It said the kin of the dead would be rehabilitated. Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah made the announcement after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met top officials. — PTI
