Mathrubhumi film awards announced

Lal Jose’s ‘Classmates’ bags best film award

Chennai: Malayalam film ‘Classmates’, directed by Lal Jose, has bagged the ‘best film of 2006’ honour at the Mathrubhumi film awards announced here on Friday.

The Rs. 1 lakh cash award will be presented at a grand function to be organised by the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi in Kochi in the second week of October. Director K.S. Sethumadhavan, chairman of the film awards jury, told reporters that Sarath Vayalar’s lyrics in ‘Classmates’ had also won an award. Sathyan Anthikkad was adjudged the best director (for Rasathanthram), while the top acting honours went to Mamooty (Palunku) and Padmapriya (Vadakkumnathan).

Best character actor titles went to Jagathy Sreekumar (Palunku) and Muthumani (Rasathanthram).

Scriptwriter Girish Puthanchery walked off with an award for ‘Vadakkumnathan’, cameraperson Azhakappan for ‘Rasathanthram’ and technical editor V. Jayasankar for ‘Keerthichakra’.

Singers Vineeth Sreenivasan and Manjari have also won top honours. The best art director award went to Prasanth Madhav (Rasathanthram), best sound recordist award to Ajith George (Karuthapakshikal), best child artiste award to Niveditha (Palunku), award for the best background score to Ouseppachan (Vadakkumnathan), for excellence in acting to Mohanlal (Vadakumnathan), and the special jury award to director Major Ravi and producer R.B. Choudhary (Keerthichakra).

The jury comprised film personalities and artists, including P.N. Sundaram, B. Vasantha, Rohini, O.K. Johny and P.N. Gopinath.
