Outcome of civic poll will help BJP: Yediyurappa

Special Correspondent

Performance of Government to be main plank of party’s campaign

Gearing up for elections: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa addressing BJP workers in Shimoga on Sunday.

SHIMOGA: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said here on Sunday that the “impressive” performance of the coalition Government in the past 19 months would be the main plank of the BJP’s campaign for the coming civic body elections.

Addressing a conference of BJP workers, he said the outcome of the elections would change the political scenario of the State, making it beneficial to his party in the Lok Sabha elections, which seemed imminent in April or May next in view of the continued stand off between the Congress and the Left parties at the Centre.

He asked the party workers to take advantage of the situation and create an atmosphere favourable for the BJP in the coming elections. Mr. Yediyurappa said that the two budgets presented by him had come in for appreciation from the people and asked the party workers to cash in on the goodwill and support that the performance of the Government had generated in favour of the BJP. “So far, we used to approach voters as an Opposition party. But as a ruling party, we are seeking votes on the strength of our party’s achievement,” he said. The party workers should explain the welfare measures introduced by the Government in the past 19 months, he added.

Mr. Yediyurappa urged the party workers to make a list of people’s problems during their campaign.

Mr. Yediyurappa said that his Government had launched programmes such as “Bhagyalakshmi” to encourage education among girls and was providing a monetary assistance of Rs. 400 to poor people aged above 65 and had distributed ration cards.

He said the Government had taken the land encroachment issue seriously. The land recovered would be converted into sites and distributed among poor families.

He reiterated his resolve to make Shimoga a model city in the State and sought people’s support for his party in the coming elections.

Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, Chairman of the Malnad Area Development Board Padmanabh Bhat, Chairman of the Shimoga Urban Development Authority S.N. Channabasappa, State BJP Secretary M.B. Bhanu Prakash, State Yuva BJP Secretary S. Dattatri, former Shimoga MP Ayanur Manjunath, Vice-President of the district unit S.S. Jyothiprakash and president of the district unit women’s morcha Suvarna Shankar were present. President of the district unit of the party Girish Patel presided over the conference.
