Trafficking in women: 12 held

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Guntur police have busted two inter-district rackets involving trafficking in women and rescued six girls, including two minors.

The police took 12 persons, including eight women, into custody on the charges of luring and forcing innocent girls from Guntur and neighbouring districts into prostitution.

The police also recovered 12 cellphones from the accused persons.

“We will be sending the rescued girls to rehabilitation homes run by voluntary organisations and also write to the Women and Child Welfare Department to provide financial assistance to them,” Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha told reporters here on Sunday evening.

The arrests were made following credible information provided by two women arrested by the Lalapet police.

The cops raided a house at Sanjeeviah Nagar and arrested a couple – Morthapudi Sankar and Jarupala Sri Latha – and rescued two girls.

Based on information given by them, they arrested five other persons.

Meanwhile, the police, following the trail of operations of another trafficking gang, raided the house of Kurimetla Bapamma and rescued three girls.

The police also arrested four others who allegedly had been aiding the woman in the commission of the crime.

SP’s warning

The SP said that the police would keep a vigil on the movements of traffickers and warned that anyone involved in prostitution or trafficking would be severely punished.

Town DSP Rajendranath, Lalapet Sub Inspector M. Hanumantha Rao were present.
