This Day That Age
Mr. Frank Anthony, Anglo-Indian leader, said in New Delhi on September 15 that English was as much an Indian language as any of the other languages of the country, since it was the mother-tongue of a recognised Indian community. “If motives of language imperialism prompted a policy of effacing English, irreparable injury would be done to India, both politically and educationally,” he said, addressing the annual general meeting of the Delhi branch of the All-India Anglo-Indian Association. English, he said, was the “last remaining bond of emotional integration” in the country, as it was the “only means of communion of ideas among the leaders.” He said it was a good thing that the Parliamentary Committee report, which would examine the Language Commission’s recommendations, would come up before Parliament before any action was taken by the President.
