dated September 17, 1957: West German elections

The West German Chancellor, Dr. Konrad Adenauer’s Christian Democratic Party has won by an overwhelming majority in the country’s general elections, with 14,996,504 votes as against 9,490,119 polled by the Social Democrats, their nearest rivals. Dr. Adenauer is thus assured of an absolute majority in the new Bundestag and his re-election as Chancellor. With the results of all the 247 constituencies known, the score was: Christian Democrats 194 (172 in 1953), Social Democrats 46 (45), German Party 6 (10), Free Democrats 1 (14). Dr. Adenauer was re-elected from his Bonn constituency.
