This Day That Age
Singapore will remain Britain’s main base in the Far East, Mr. Duncan Sandys, Britain’s Defence Minister, said at a press conference in Singapore on September 14. “In Malaya and Singapore alone we have at present about 40,000 soldiers and airmen, apart from the navy, and we shall continue to maintain large forces of all the three services for the defence of this area,” he said. The importance of Mr. Sandys’ statement lies in the fact that he sticks to what he said in Australia early this month – that Britain will not quit Singapore – and stresses two phrases, “main base” and “defence of this area.”
