KATHMANDU: Maoist Chairman Prachanda on Saturday met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and threatened to quit the government if his party’s 22-point charter of demands was not met by Monday. Mr. Prachandatold Mr. Koirala that the Maoists would launch a nationwide agitation to press their demands. Unless Nepal was declared a republic and the present mixed system was replaced by a proportional system of election, the Constituent Assembly polls slated for November 22 were not possible, he said. Mr. Koirala advised the Maoists against quitting the government and said the Constituent Assembly elected by the people would decide the fate of the monarchy. Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon has arrived here for consultations. Mr. Menon will meet Mr. Koirala, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan.
