LNCPE swimming pool inaugurated

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The newly-constructed swimming pool at the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariyavattom, was inaugurated at a simple yet colourful ceremony by the Union Minister for Youth Affairs, Sports and Panchayati Raj, Mani Shankar Aiyar, on Saturday.

Speaking at the function, the Minister announced that sanction would be given soon for establishing a modern sports science research centre and a sports medicine centre in the college.

The Government would also look into the complaint of lack of indoor training facilities in the college and come out with plans to rectify this.

The Kerala Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, who presided over the function, assured those present that he would take up the demand of the college for additional land with the Education Minister and the Kerala University authorities.

Big role to play

He said the LNCPE had a big role to play in the development of sports and games in Kerala in the coming days and as such the demand for additional land to construct more facilities in the college could not be ignored.

The Sports Authority of India Director General, Ratan P. Watal, who welcomed the gathering, said the activities relating to the laying of the synthetic athletic track in the college would be completed by this year end.

He also said that SAI was aware of the need for a synthetic turf for hockey in the college. The LNCPE Principal, S.S. Harani, proposed a vote of thanks.

The function also saw a brilliant aerobic display by the students of the college.

Matches postponed

At Kottayam, the Alappuzha-Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam matches in the South Zone under-19 inter-district cricket tournament have been postponed due to rain.

The matches will be played on September 21 and 22.
