Onus on YSR

A great responsibility lies on the shoulders of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as the fate of the Congress party in the 2009 elections at the Centre and State is in his hands. Andhra Pradesh sends a good number of Congress MPs who can shift the equilibrium in the parliament in favour of the Congress. People are looking for better governance, but it is becoming a mirage.

Grievances are not being redressed at all in the Government. Even personal representations to the CM regarding claim of seniority in an aided institution funded by the State Government could neither deliver justice nor did it stop the perpetration of injustice. The red tape should be cut to size. If the learned cannot get justice, imagine the fate of the illiterate masses.

Strengthen policing

With several areas on the outskirts now merged to form the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), there is an imperative need to strengthen policing in the sub-urban areas.

In Sagarnagar, some anti-social elements in inebriated condition entered the Saibaba temple and had beaten the priest. I appeal to the Commissioner of Police to issue orders for patrolling in the colony.

Uncovered and unsafe

In the Gajuwaka zone of GVMC, there is a VUDA double road which joins the VUDA 60 feet road from Old Gajuwaka Junction and VUDA colonies.

There was a drain beneath the road with a culvert over it near Kanithi Road a couple of years back, but it was covered and another drain along the double road was dug, further narrowing down the road resulting in traffic congestion.

Now, with no dividers or barriers here, the vehicles are falling into the drain resulting in injuries. We urge the GVMC authorities to take remedial measures in the public interest.

Worthy judgment

The Visakhapatnam District Consumer Forum-I has recently awarded Rs.5 lakhs as compensation in the case of accidental death of a minor boy who had come into contact with high tension wire running close to a building.

The judge’s critical remarks about the condition of poor laying of electric lines and the imminent danger to the lives of residents should serve as an eye opener to the EPDCL.

The latter’s plea that the boy being a minor was not an earning member and so there was no basis for giving compensation, was not only an attempt to evade the responsibility but also shows apathy towards public life.

The judge was right in rejecting it with an admonition. I hail the judgement and thank the Forum.
