Released life convicts get vocational kits for their rehabilitation

TIRUCHI: The life convicts released from the Tiruchi Central Prisons on September 15 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of late C. N. Annadurai, were in a for a pleasant surprise when they were presented with vocational kits like sewing machines, equipment used in the construction activities, sprayers and cycle for their rehabilitation and self-employment.

The kits were presented by the Prisons Department in association with different voluntary organisations at a brief function held at the prison premises on Saturday.

The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Tiruchi Range, B. M. Ezra handed over the kits to the released prisoners.

This is said to be the first time in the history of the Prisons Department that the released persons were presented with kits for their rehabilitation.

The State Government ordered the release of 29 life convicts, including a woman, who had completed ten years of conviction in the Tiruchi Central Prisons. Of them ten were presented with vocational kits.

Mr. Ezra handed over sewing machines to five – Kumar, Shanmugam, Rajarathinam, Sambasivam and Selvam, sprayers to three – Periasamy, Selvaraj and Theerthakarai and construction equipment to Anthony Peter and bicycle to Muniandi. The woman Palaniammal was presented with a new dress.

These kits were sponsored by Bethel World Vision India, Salem, Holy Redeemers Girls Higher Secondary School, Tiruchi, Lions Club of Tiruchi city and Rotary Club of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ezra urged the released to settle down in their lives with the kits provided.

The vocational training imparted to them as part of rehabilitation during their jail term, will help them in this effort, he added.

He advised them to lead a decent life, utilising the economic support they would gain from these kits.

The Superintendent of the Prison, N. Sekar, representatives of the service organisations which donated the kits were present on the occasion.
