On board ACV H-183: In an effort to beef up security following the recent intelligent inputs and to curb subversive activities perpetuated across the border, the Coast Guard has chalked out a new strategy by deploying OPV class (offshore patrol vessels) in Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay.
“The Coast Guard has started round-the-clock patrolling along the coast. Considering the security concerns in this region and the pattern of ‘activities’ in the monsoon, sophisticated bigger ships will be deployed,” Inspector General Rajendra Singh, Commander, Eastern Region, Coast Guard told The Hindu on Sunday.
He said that Coast Guard Vikram, an OPV, would be sent to Rameswaram coast next week.
Coast Guard ships, Varuna and Veera, from thte west coast would follow soon. .
A group of Coast Guard officers, led by Commander K. Janardhanan, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station, Mandapam, held a discussion on a hovercraft, ACV H-183, near Kachatheevu on Sunday. “We consider it is a highly sensitive region. Concerted efforts are in force to prevent illegal activities in the region,” said Mr. Janardhanan. Besides two hovercrafts, six interceptor crafts and two interceptor boats were engaged for continuous patrolling.
