HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is considering setting up a time-frame for the UPA-Left committee constituted to resolve the standoff on the Indo-US nuclear deal. “The committee’s work is yet to start and the first meeting was aimed at deciding about the issues that should be discussed. We will have an idea about how long it would take to address the concerns expressed by the Left parties during the next meeting,” CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said. His statement comes ahead of the crucial meeting of the 15-member committee on September 19. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the CPI (M) general secretary hoped that the situation would be ‘much clearer’ about the 123-agreement and the implications of the Hyde Act on the country’s independent foreign policy in the next meeting. The Left parties were, however, firm that a final decision on the agreement should be taken only after evaluating all aspects in the country’s interest. On the possibility of early elections he said: “I can’t answer the question as I don’t know.” The Left was particular that the panel undertook all aspects pertaining to the nuclear deal. “Let it come out with its findings. Then only we can say something,” he said expressing hope that the Government would reconsider its position on the concerns expressed by the Left. Mr. Karat criticised the Government for its claims on containing inflation that stood at 3.52 per cent since this had not helped controlling the prices of essential commodities.
