Jalandhar: The former Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader, L.K. Advani, said on Sunday that the Central Bureau of Investigation should appeal against the acquittal of Abdul Nasir Maudany in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts case. “I respect the court decision. Maudany, who masterminded the blasts [in a bid] to kill me, was acquitted since the CBI could not present adequate evidence against him. Now, the CBI should file an appeal against his acquittal,” Mr. Advani said here at a function of the Hind Samachar Group to distribute relief compensation to terror victims. Without naming anyone, he said a senior government functionary had recently termed the verdict as “more of political in nature than judicial.” Chairman of Kerala-based PDP, Maudany was exonerated of all charges in the serial blasts cases by a special court in Coimbatore on August 1. Mr. Advani advocated the need for a stern anti-terror law to combat terrorism and appealed for zero tolerance against the menace. “Laws cannot prevent terror acts but are strong deterrents and exhibit the attitude of the state towards terrorism,” he said and charged the government with being reluctant to execute Afzal Guru, who was sentenced to death for the terror attack on Parliament. He presented relief compensation of Rs.19.95 lakh to 133 terror-affected families. — PTI
