Letters to the Editor
The report that the bodies of the 10 persons lynched by a mob in Bihar were thrown into the Ganga instead of being cremated is shocking. People deserve honour at least in death. The incident, coming after the gruesome torture meted out to a petty thief by the people and the police in Bhagalpur, and the blinding of three youths for stealing a motorcycle in Nawada, reflect very poorly on the law and order situation in the State. J. Anantha Padmanabhan, Srirangam The savagery of the villagers of Delhpurwa sends a chill down the spine. Such acts, besides putting a question mark on the law and order situation, depict the growing intolerance of society and the erosion of human values. Vinod Kumar, Thiruvananthapuram The cartoon (Sept. 17) was a telling portrayal of Bihar, where people continue to indulge in heinous acts by taking the law into their own hands. What is happening there is a shame on the entire humanity. S.C. Poornima, Bangalore When we let the people take the law into their hands, we accept a form of terrorism. Just as we justify terrorism on the grounds of suppression and oppression of a few, some sections justify the actions of mobs. Have our law enforcement agencies failed to do their job? K.R. Kumar, Manama
