Mohandas likely to be Chief Secretary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior IAS Officer K. Mohandas is being actively considered for appointment as Chief Secretary.

The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday would take a decision on it. Mr. Mohandas is currently on deputation to the Centre as Additional Secretary (Revenue).

The Centre has reportedly communicated to the Chief Minister’s office that the services of Gopalakrishnan Pillai, Sudha Pillai and Vinod Rai, who are senior to Mr. Mohandas and are on deputation at the Centre, cannot be spared.

The IAS Officers Association had protested against the sidelining of the senior-most IAS officer P. J. Thomas when the Government gave temporary charge of Chief Secretary’s office to K. J. Mathew, who is junior to him.

Though the Chief Minister did not respond favourably to the representation of IAS Officers, it is likely that Mr. Thomas will be allowed to go on deputation to the Centre while Mr. Mohandas is being brought back.

Mr. Achuthanandan is reluctant to consider Mr. Thomas for the post, as he is one of the accused in the palmolein case.

The palmolein case has been dragging on for 15 years now.

Meanwhile, the IAS Officers Association is holding consultations to decide on their future course of action in view of rejection of their demand by Mr. Achuthanandan.
