Welcome step

This has reference to the news report ‘Zero waste management project launched in Tenkasi’ in The Hindu, dated September10. The steady rise in the use of packaged drinking water, consumables wrapped up in plastic bags and the like have all contributed to the accumulation of garbage in all towns. This has made garbage disposal a Herculean task to the local bodies due to inadequate infrastructure and paucity of funds. In these circumstances, the launching of Zero Waste Management (ZWM) in Tenkasi Municipality is a welcome step. The authorities of the Municipality deserve praise for their efforts.

At the same time, the public should also cooperate with the local body by avoiding usage of plastic bags and not dispose the wastes on the streets and in the drains.

Introduce train to Coimbatore

An overnight express between Nagercoil and Coimbatore and between Coimbatore and Nagercoil via Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kovilpatti, Vanjimaniyatchi Junction and Tirunelveli was announced in the Railway Budget for 2007-08.

The Southern Railway time table also notified the train no.6609 Nagercoil-Coimbatore and train no.6610 Coimbatore- Nagercoil as well as departure and arrival time.

But so far Southern Railway has not introduced this train service. Moreover with the closure of metre gauge line between Madurai and Dindigul is also closed and the Madurai-Podanur train is also affected. At present people are entirely depending solely on road journey for long distance route. I request the railway authorities to take immediate steps to introduce the Nagercoil-Coimbatore train at the earliest.

Bad road

Agasthiyar Falls is an attraction for tourists and pilgrims. Unlike many other falls nearby, including the main falls at Courtallam, which are only seasonal, Agasthiyar Falls has water flowing throughout the year and there is a heavy tourist flow.

Frequent vehicle movement coupled with the wet condition caused by rain has left the road leading to the falls, from the Karaiyar main road, in a bad condition.

More over, there is no proper toilet facility. Will the authorities concerned take necessary steps in this regard.

Rural service for doctors

This is with reference to the strike opposing compulsory rural service. It is unfortunate that the medical post graduates are also in the same boat with an obligation to execute a compulsory bond for 5 years.

The intention of the Government is good; but the method employed to achieve it seems to defeat the purpose.

If the government can make it optional and give the following incentives to those who opt for rural service, there will be no problem in getting the required manpower.

Preference in PG selection and permanent government service for those who fulfil the optional bond. During the PG course, paying a stipend twice as much as the usual to those who opt for the optional bond. Rural Service Allowance (RSA - 30 per cent of the basic pay) can be given to those who serve in rural areas.

Remove unwanted details

In TNSTC buses, route number and terminal place name is sufficient. But in the window frames names of some locations are written which may not tally with the places the bus is destined to run.

So also in the front mirror location names to which the bus may not touch are found.

Hence it is requested that the TNSTC may give up writing location names on window frames and front mirror as buses are directed to ply as situations warrant. Gullible persons and tourists are boarding the buses by reading the window frames.

Kanyakumari.
