Staff Reporter

To develop advanced technologies for best use of earth minerals

TIRUNELVELI: Anna University – Tirunelveli will soon establish four centres of excellence in rare earth minerals, ocean resources, renewable energy sources and environmental studies with the objective of utilising the abundantly available natural resources in the region.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday after assuming office, its first Vice-Chancellor, S. Kaliappan, said that the objective of establishing these centres was to develop advanced technologies for judiciously using the copiously available rare earth minerals on the coastline of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, ocean resources and wind energy of Muppandal near Aralvoimozhi.

“We will frame the curriculum in such a manner so that students coming out of the 50-odd engineering colleges in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts, which fall under the jurisdiction of Anna University – Tirunelveli, will be able to use the locally available resources to produce superior products,” Dr. Kaliappan said.

He also noted that the centre to be established on ‘environment’ would work on the mission of developing better know-how on ensuring unpolluted environment in the wake of Tirunelveli and its surroundings about to be industrialised in a big way.

Remote sensing technology would be appropriately applied in all the four fields, he said.

Dr. Kaliappan informed that the Anna University – Tirunelveli would offer 5-year integrated M. Sc. and M. Tech. programmes for the benefit of Plus Two students and facilitate the establishment of Government colleges of engineering in Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts.
