dated September 18, 1957: Martial law in Thailand

Thailand’s Army on September 17 took over the country and ordered the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Pibul Songgram, to resign. The Army Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, moved his troops into the capital and put Thailand under martial law as the climax to a month-long feud with the Government. He said he had the support of King Phumiphon Aduldet, who, he also said, had appointed him “Custodian of Bangkok for Military Affairs.” Field Marshal Pibul was reported to have left the city as troops surrounded the Government House.
