Kolkata: “We will not cower before the West Bengal government that is bent on forcing peasants to part with their land for setting up projects in the State,” Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said here on Monday while announcing the next phase of her stir to retrieve land allegedly acquired forcibly for the Tata Motors car project at Singur. The Tata Motors project has the backing of the Italian automobile company, Fiat, as has the chemical hub that is to be set up by the Indonesian Salim Group, she said. Ms. Banerjee said that she would launch her new campaign against the Singur project with a “march to Singur” on September 25. “We will compel the government to return the land to those who had parted with it against their wishes,” she said, ridiculing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s statement that the project would not be rolled back. Ms. Banerjee blamed the government for adopting double standard by opposing the Centre’s direct foreign investment policy yet implementing the same in West Bengal. Speaking at the conclusion of a meeting of the Krishi Jami, Jiban, Jibika Raksha (Save Farmland, Lives and Livelihood) Committee of which the Trinamool Congress is a principal constituent, Ms. Banerjee said her march to Singur would coincide with the anniversary of the movement against the Singur project and “State-sponsored terrorism unleashed against the farmers.” The march would be followed by a 72-hour demonstration demanding the return of forcibly acquired land at Singur, she added.
