Commission agents in market yards to go

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to do away with the system of commission agents in agricultural market yards in a phased manner, as part of implementing the recommendations of Jayati Ghosh committee.

While the committee recommended abolition of the commission agents set-up, the Markets Act also prohibits the practice.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, while reviewing the performance of Agricultural Market Committees (AMC) here on Monday, asked the officials concerned to study the Madhya Pradesh model, where the set-up of commission agents was phased out.

The officials informed the Chief Minister that initiatives were launched for building marketing complexes in Hyderabad, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam under public-private partnership (PPP) model for establishing post-harvest management infrastructure and marketing facilities for horticulture produce.
